Video Of Fire Service Personnel Using Sachet Water To Fight Fire Goes Viral On Social Media

A video showing personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) attempting to extinguish a fire using sachets of water has circulated online, drawing attention to what many describe as the under-resourced state of the country’s emergency response agency.

The footage has sparked criticism from social media users, many of whom questioned how a national fire service tasked with protecting lives and property could be seen relying on sachet water, a stopgap measure more commonly associated with ordinary citizens attempting to help during emergencies, rather than trained personnel equipped with proper firefighting tools.

The weird incident has added to a string of recent concerns about GNFS’s operational capacity, with past incidents including lengthy firefighting efforts hampered by water supply issues and a lack of functional fire hydrants, as seen during a 48-hour blaze in Kumasi’s Adum area, as well as public reliance on makeshift methods like sachet water during a church fire in Kasoa earlier this year.

The GNFS has not yet issued a statement addressing the specific video or the concerns it has raised about the agency’s readiness and equipment levels.

Meanwhile, in Ghana, The Ghana National Fire Service is known to be one of the institutions lacking support and resources.
