The Working People United (WoPU), a coalition of workers, professionals and artisans, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, describing him as its preferred candidate.
The coalition made its position known through its Coordinator-General, Comrade (Prince) Williams Eniredonana Akporeha, after the 66th Independence Thanksgiving Service held at Living Faith Church, Asaba.
The event, which also marked the 72nd birthday of Bishop David Oyedepo, was attended by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Akporeha, a former President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), commended Tinubu’s administration, describing its approach to the country’s economic and structural challenges as bold and courageous.
According to him, Tinubu has demonstrated what WoPU considers the vision and capacity required to address Nigeria’s longstanding problems.
He urged Nigerians, particularly young people, to assess the administration’s policies and record as they consider their choices ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Although President Tinubu inherited a collapsed country, he has shown the boldness to revive this dead seed called Nigeria so it can grow again and yield prosperity,” Akporeha said.
WoPU cited several policies and reforms of the Tinubu administration in support of its position, including the removal of fuel subsidy, the floating of the naira, efforts to increase domestic petroleum refining and the administration’s advocacy for state police and resource control.
The coalition argued that subsidy removal had redirected government resources towards development, while the naira reforms had strengthened export competitiveness and could help attract foreign investment.
WoPU also pointed to the emergence of new domestic refining capacity as part of what it described as efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s petroleum supply chain and reduce dependence on imported refined products.
Akporeha further defended Tinubu against criticisms surrounding the administration’s reforms, saying the President’s supporters believe he is motivated by national development rather than personal wealth or political power.
“We want a leader who has tested power and used it for the good of all. President Tinubu is detribalised, unbiased, and has zero tolerance for religious bigotry. He has the resources and the will to finish the job meritoriously,” he said.
The coalition also announced plans for a nationwide sensitisation campaign targeting workers, artisans, professionals and young Nigerians as part of efforts to mobilise support for Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.
Akporeha said WoPU believes Nigeria’s current challenges require what he described as resilience and tenacity, qualities he said the President had demonstrated through his political and public-service career.
The endorsement adds WoPU to the growing number of groups and political organisations already declaring their positions ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
