A US-based political advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, saying the United States cannot afford to allow President Bola Tinubu to rig the polls.
The firm made the statement in a post on its verified X account on Thursday, September 24, 2026, arguing that free and fair elections in Nigeria would be important to American interests in the country and the wider West African region.
“The U.S. cannot afford to allow President #Tinubu to rig the upcoming Nigerian election,” the firm stated.
It also alleged that there is growing concern across political divides over corruption within the Nigerian government under Tinubu.
The firm further claimed that Tinubu appointed an individual linked by the US Department of Justice to the alleged embezzlement of funds from Nigeria’s treasury to serve as the country’s current minister in charge of the budget. It did not provide supporting documentation for the allegation in its latest post.
Von Batten-Montague-York also warned that what it described as “lawlessness” could put Nigeria on a path similar to Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, while stressing that credible elections would be necessary to protect US interests in Nigeria and the wider region.
Earlier this month, the firm also alleged that the Tinubu administration was using institutions including INEC, the judiciary and law enforcement agencies against opposition parties and candidates. The firm did not provide evidence for those claims in the post.
