The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate in Benue State, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, has condemned the obstruction of the convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Makurdi.
Aondoakaa, a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, described the incident as an assault on democracy and called on security agencies to investigate those responsible.
Obi was in Benue on Tuesday for political engagements and a visit to Yelwata when his convoy was blocked by some youths.
The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the incident, saying the reason the youths blocked the convoy was still unknown and that an investigation had commenced.
Reacting in a statement issued by his media assistant, James Ian, Aondoakaa said Nigerians have constitutional rights to freedom of movement, association and political participation irrespective of their political affiliations.
He argued that attempts to obstruct or intimidate political opponents were inconsistent with democratic principles and could undermine peaceful political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, political parties and candidates should be allowed to campaign and engage Nigerians freely without harassment or intimidation.
Aondoakaa said the incident portrayed Benue State negatively, insisting that the actions of those involved did not represent the character of the people of the state.
“Benue people are renowned for their hospitality, civility, and respect for visitors. Our state has always welcomed people from different political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
“The attack on Mr. Peter Obi is therefore inconsistent with the true identity of our people and should be condemned by all lovers of democracy irrespective of political affiliation,” he said.
Aondoakaa called on security agencies to conduct what he described as a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident and bring anyone found responsible to justice, irrespective of their status or political connections.
He also urged security agencies to guarantee the safety of political actors and other Nigerians exercising their constitutional rights.
The PDP candidate appealed to Benue residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding, maintaining that violence, intimidation and political thuggery should have no place in the state’s politics.
