Former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has endorsed the “Tinubu Must Go” (TMG) movement, describing the campaign as a reflection of Nigerians’ growing desire for change.
Atiku gave his endorsement after receiving Abba Hikima, one of the conveners of the movement, at his residence in Abuja on Monday, according to a statement issued after the meeting.
The “Tinubu Must Go” campaign gained prominence during the nationwide Democracy Day protests on June 12, 2026, when demonstrators in cities including Lagos and Abuja chanted the slogan while demanding action over insecurity and the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The campaign evolved into an organised movement in mid-September, with its organisers describing it as a non-partisan platform focused on public enlightenment and opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.
The movement later conducted a 24-hour online poll between September 24 and 25, asking participants to choose among leading opposition presidential candidates.
Atiku said he was encouraged by the poll, which he claimed attracted 109,799 respondents and gave him 73.6 per cent of the votes, while the ADC emerged as the preferred political platform.
“I am particularly encouraged by the depth of citizen engagement reflected in the exercise, in which my candidacy received an overwhelming 73.6% of the votes, with the ADC emerging as the preferred political platform,” he said.
He added that the significance of the exercise went beyond the poll result, describing it as evidence of what he called a growing national demand for change.
“Beyond the outcome of the poll, what is significant is the larger aspiration it represents: a growing national yearning for change and the collective determination to rescue Nigeria from its present trajectory.
“I fully endorse the movement and invite all Nigerians who share this aspiration to join this noble cause.”
Atiku said he looked forward to engaging with the wider leadership of the movement as it pursues what he described as the goal of rebuilding a united, prosperous and democratic Nigeria.
