Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martinez has explained his decision to leave Nigerian striker Victor Boniface out of the club’s UEFA Europa League squad.
He gave the explanation ahead of their Bundesliga match against Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon.
Despite an impressive pre-season following a disappointing loan spell at Werder Bremen during the 2025/2026 season, the Nigeria international was not included in the Europa League squad.
During his press conference on Friday, Martinez explained that Boniface had not fully recovered, even though he had shown signs of improvement during pre-season.
“Two months ago, when we began our preparations,” Martinez stated, as reported by Kicker.
“This question was unexpected. He wasn’t ready; he was experiencing pain, his knee was not in good condition, and physically, he was significantly behind.”
Nevertheless, the manager noted that the Nigerian striker was recovering and expressed optimism that Boniface could regain his peak form in the 2026/2027 season.
“The positive aspect is that his knee is responding better. There are still some minor issues from time to time, but overall, it is much improved. Such a talent deserves a better year, not just this year, but throughout his career.”
While Martinez is hopeful that Boniface will return to form, he acknowledged that the Nigerian international is not yet ready to compete in the Europa League.
“I hope you can inquire about the reason for this decision every week, as Boni continues to improve. That would be the best outcome for both him and the club.”
Martinez also indicated that Boniface could return to the club’s European squad if his condition improves.
“In many matches, when we require a goal, Boni is on my mind. We will assist him in his development, and I hope that in the coming months or by the end of the season, we can say: Boni is at 100 percent.”
Boniface will now focus on his recovery as he works towards regaining full fitness.
