A video showing the driver’s mate of a DAF XF 95 truck, registration number GN 8043-16, cooking a pot of jollof rice on a gas cylinder while the vehicle was still in motion has stirred alarm online over the safety risks involved.
In the footage, the mate can be seen seated inside the moving cab, carefully stirring a steaming pot balanced within reach as the truck continues along the road.
A cloth is used to handle the hot pot, suggesting the cooking setup, likely powered by a small gas burner connected to the cylinder, had been running for some time before the video was recorded.
While such improvised in-transit meal preparation may reflect the practical realities faced by long-haul drivers and their mates, who often spend extended hours on the road far from regular stops, the practice raises serious safety concerns.
Cooking with an open flame or gas-powered burner inside a moving vehicle introduces significant fire risk, particularly in the event of sudden braking, a collision, or any disturbance that could tip the pot or destabilise the gas setup.
The clip has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many expressing disbelief at the risk being taken, while others acknowledged the demanding, often gruelling conditions long-distance drivers endure, conditions that sometimes push them toward unconventional and hazardous workarounds just to eat a proper meal on the job.
