D’Tigress touch down in Berlin ahead of World Cup group B opener

Nigeria’s women arrived in Berlin on Wednesday carrying more than travel bags they’re carrying the weight of a season that has already rewritten what African basketball is supposed to look like, and now has to prove it wasn’t a one-off.
D’Tigress touched down ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and were met by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany, Ita Enang, along with staff from the Berlin diplomatic mission. It was a quiet landing for a team that has spent the past two years doing anything but quiet things.
Rena Wakama’s side got here the long way. Camps and warm-up games took them through the United States, China, and Tenerife before a final stretch in Zaragoza, Spain, where they beat up on Mali and Puerto Rico in tune-up matches.
That’s four countries and three continents of preparation for a tournament that starts Friday and runs through September 13 the kind of build-up a team runs when it’s not just showing up to compete, but showing up to be believed.
They have reason to be believed. D’Tigress are five-time reigning African champions, having dismantled Mali 78-64 in last year’s AfroBasket final in Abidjan.

Two years ago, they became the first African basketball team men’s or women’s to reach an Olympic quarter-final, at the Paris Games. Every marker they’ve touched over the past two years has been a first.
Except the one they actually came to Berlin for. D’Tigress’ best-ever World Cup finish is a quarter-final and eighth place, set back in 2018 a ceiling this generation has already smashed at the Olympics, but hasn’t yet touched here. That’s the gap this tournament is really about.
The road won’t make it easy. Nigeria open Group B against South Korea on Friday, face Hungary on Saturday, and close out the group stage against France on Monday a run that offers no soft night to find their footing.
