Nigeria’s Falconets suffered a 2-0 defeat to Spain in their opening Group F fixture at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, leaving Moses Aduku’s side searching for answers ahead of a pivotal clash with China PR.
Spain dominated proceedings at ArcelorMittal Park in Sosnowiec, Poland, controlling large stretches of the match against a Nigerian side many had tipped to challenge for the knockout rounds.
Marisa Garcia broke the deadlock in the 13th minute, capitalizing on space in behind Nigeria’s backline to put the Falconets on the back foot early.
Aduku’s team pushed to respond and stayed within touching distance through the rest of the first half, but they couldn’t crack Spain’s disciplined defensive setup before the interval. The visitors regrouped after the break, only to watch Spain reassert control.

Alba Cerrato doubled the lead in the 73rd minute, finishing clinically to secure the win for the defending champions and end any hope of a Nigerian comeback.
The result leaves the Falconets bottom of Group F with zero points and a minus-two goal difference heading into their second fixture. They now turn to China PR, knowing anything less than a win will severely damage their chances of advancing to the knockout stage.
Nigeria’s frustration deepened when the rest of Matchday 1 concluded across the tournament. In Group A, hosts Poland seized top spot with a 3-0 win over Argentina, while Benin and Mexico shared the points after a 2-2 draw. Brazil asserted themselves in Group B, thrashing Tanzania 4-1, as Canada and England settled for a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Ecuador claimed control of Group C with a 3-0 win over Ghana, while France and South Korea split points in a 1-1 draw. Italy and Japan both opened with wins in Group D, defeating the United States and New Zealand 2-1 respectively. Colombia and North Korea moved level on three points atop Group E, leaving Costa Rica and Portugal pointless after their meeting.
In Group F, China set the pace with a commanding 5-0 win over New Caledonia, matching Spain’s perfect record after their win over Nigeria. The Falconets, meanwhile, must now dig deep to salvage their campaign with two matches remaining.
History adds extra weight to Nigeria’s task. The Falconets have featured in every edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup since its inception in 2002, cementing themselves as one of the tournament’s most consistent participants.
Yet the elusive title still escapes them — Nigeria finished runners-up in both 2010 and 2014, coming agonizingly close on each occasion without ever lifting the trophy.
