The Federal Government has expressed appreciation to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for donating $265,854 to support the evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the donation will be used to purchase 500 one-way flight tickets for Nigerians seeking to return home following renewed xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks in the country.
The contribution was made by the church under the leadership of Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, the ministry described the donation as “a significant demonstration of RCCG’s compassion, solidarity and genuine commitment to providing succour to distressed and stranded Nigerians.”
The ministry also said the gesture demonstrated how faith-based organisations and public institutions could work together to address humanitarian challenges.
The Federal Government began the ongoing evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa on June 10, 2026, following a fresh wave of xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, 1,640 Nigerian nationals have so far been brought back to the country, with the Federal Government fully sponsoring the return of 1,385 people.
It added that 255 Nigerians were evacuated through philanthropic donations, while another 202 Nigerians are currently awaiting final screening by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs before they can return.
The ministry said the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria and the Consulate-General in Johannesburg would continue assisting Nigerians who wish to leave South Africa.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerian citizens abroad and said it would continue engaging the South African authorities over recurring cases of xenophobia and Afrophobia.
