Foreign missions urged to fix visa delays for Nigerian travellers

Nigerian citizens seeking foreign travel visas are set to experience relief, following a direct appeal by the federal government to foreign embassies, consulates and high commissions across the country.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, raised the issue in Abuja on Saturday during her first formal meeting with members of the diplomatic corps and leaders of international organisations.

She asked foreign missions operating in the country to establish specific measures that would reduce visa difficulties for Nigerian applicants.

The diplomatic gathering served as an interactive session to discuss international cooperation, security of foreign offices, upcoming national elections and cultural diplomacy.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s foreign policy rests on four main pillars: demography, development, democracy and diaspora.

She stated that strategic autonomy and national interest will guide all future international activities involving the country.

To boost trade and international cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to reactivate dormant bi-national and joint commissions.

These revived partnerships will focus on delivering direct results in trade, digital financial technology, investment, agriculture, security, skill development and education.

Communication channels and mission security

During the session, the minister stressed the need for diplomatic offices to send all official letters directly through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She stated that clear communication pathways are necessary to build closer dialogue between the government and foreign nations.

In return, the ministry promised to provide quick responses to all incoming consular and diplomatic requests from foreign envoys.

The discussions also addressed safety measures for foreign missions located across Nigeria and preparations for upcoming elections in the country.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu confirmed the ministry’s commitment to protecting foreign personnel and supporting their diplomatic activities.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains your diplomatic home and we are committed to supporting your efforts and endeavors towards a successful tour of duty,” she stated.

Strengthening bilateral relations

The briefing offered the government an avenue to appreciate foreign representatives for their continuous support and working relationships.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed her gratitude to all ambassadors, high commissioners and agency heads who attended the meeting.

She shared the appreciation alongside the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and the Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed.

Staff members across all departments of the ministry also joined the ministers in hosting the visiting delegation.

The ministry expects the outcome of the meeting to lead to smoother travel processes for citizens and stronger trade ties with partner nations.
