Several communities in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, were flooded after rain that lasted about 12 hours from Sunday night into Monday.
Some houses and streets went under water.
Areas hit include Achusa, Rice Mill in Wadata, Idye and Naka Road.
Reports say the flooding got worse because of ongoing road construction and unfinished drains, some of which overflowed into nearby communities.
Our correspondent saw homes and eateries near construction sites and riverbanks badly affected as water filled the streets and entered some houses.
A resident of Achusa, Debby, said the rain was not even that heavy but still flooded the area and damaged some homes.
She praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for tackling the yearly flooding in Makurdi through road and drainage projects.
She however asked the state government to tell the construction firms to open blocked channels so water can flow freely.
She said the closing of roads and streets and the blocking of drains added to the flooding.
The Benue State Emergency Management Agency confirmed it got a report of flooding in Achusa.
Its Information Officer, Tema Ager, said the agency has not yet visited the area to assess the situation.
