Mbah names 101 aides as Enugu gears up for 2027

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has appointed 101 political and administrative aides and created a large support structure with portfolios covering grassroots mobilisation, inter-party relations, voter awareness, youth engagement, security intelligence, media and community affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointments, which take effect immediately, were announced on Monday in a public service announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
The new appointees comprise seven Special Advisers, six Senior Special Assistants and 88 Special Assistants.
The seven Special Advisers will handle Conflict Resolution and Mediation; Inter-Governmental Affairs and Co-ordination; Policy Affairs and Analysis; Stakeholders Relations and Community Affairs; Economic Development; Grassroots Coordination; and Commerce and Business Development.
Among them are Chief S.N.C. Nwagu, Dr Fidelis Odo, Augustine Okoli, Pedro Nwankwo, Chimezie Nkwuo, Chief Vitalis Okonkwo and Peter Andy Omeje.
The six Senior Special Assistants will oversee Film and Creative Industry Development, Inter-Party and Mobilisation, Party Monitoring, Legal and Regulatory Compliance, Boundary and Land Dispute Resolution, and Small and Medium Enterprise Development.
Rachael Okonkwo, Barrister Okey Ude, Chinedu Chukwunwike, Barrister Peter Chukwujekwu Ogbe, Chukwudi Ozoeluba and Frank Udemezue were named for the positions.
The largest bloc of the appointments falls under the Special Assistant category, with responsibilities spread across political affairs, public communication, infrastructure, environment, health, markets, youth development, women’s mobilisation and community relations
Among those appointed are Emma Ogbonna, Special Assistant on Civic Education and Voter Awareness; Sunday Ignatius Okafor, Political and Grassroots Mobilisation; Ugwu Ikechukwu, Inter-Party Affairs; Chukwudi Nwatu, Social Media; and Okwudili Onuora, Security Intelligence.
Other portfolios include Youth Empowerment and Skills Development, Gender Co-ordination and Empowerment, Grassroots Sports Development, Government Communication, Media Relations, Project Monitoring, Political Liaison and Community Mobilisation.
The political dimension of the appointments has also attracted attention because several of the newly created portfolios are directly connected to voter engagement and political organisation.
A political scientist based in Enugu, Dr Ifeanyi Nnamani, interpreted the appointments as an indication that the administration was strengthening its political structure ahead of the next general elections.
“The spread of these appointments, particularly the inclusion of specialists in youth engagement, women mobilisation, and inter-party relations, is a classic pre-election strategy,” Nnamani said.
He added that the structure could help strengthen the administration’s presence at ward level and improve communication of its policies to voters.
The appointments follow another batch announced by the Mbah administration last month, when 23 Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants were named.
The latest list also comes against the backdrop of heightened political activity in Enugu ahead of 2027. More than 6,000 members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress were reported to have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, although the NDC subsequently rejected claims that its structures across the state had collapsed.
Mbah’s administration has also been expanding its appointments and recruitment across other areas of governance. In July, the governor approved the recruitment of 6,580 personnel for academic, technical and administrative positions in public primary and junior secondary schools, including staffing for the state’s Smart Green Schools.
The 101 new appointments, however, are predominantly advisory, political and community-facing.
Their portfolios suggest an effort to distribute government responsibilities across specialised areas while creating additional channels between the administration and communities, interest groups and political stakeholders.
With responsibilities ranging from rural development and land surveys to public affairs, digital innovation, youth mobilisation and inter-governmental relations, the appointees are expected to serve in distinct areas of the state administration.
The appointments take effect immediately, according to the state government announcement.
