Money Bouquets And Spraying Of Cedi Notes Are Now Offences — BoG Warns Ghanaians

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has warned Ghanaians against turning cedi notes into money bouquets or using them as decorations, stressing that such practices amount to improper use of the national currency.

The central bank said the creation of money bouquets for weddings, birthdays, graduations and other occasions is prohibited under laws governing the handling of Ghana’s currency.

It also listed spraying or showering money at events, crumpling, tearing, writing on, stapling, staining and other forms of damage to banknotes as prohibited conduct.

Head of Currency Management at the BoG, Dominic Owusu, urged the public to handle cedi notes properly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.

The warning comes as the practice of using cash as part of event decorations and celebrations has become common at social gatherings in Ghana.

The BoG has said the cedi is legal tender and must be handled in accordance with the law. The central bank has also indicated that enforcement measures will be used against practices that abuse or damage the currency.

Ghanaians have therefore been encouraged to desist from using banknotes for decorative purposes and to avoid practices that could damage the currency while celebrating at social events.
