Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has urged presidential aspirants from the North to defer their ambitions until 2031, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete its two-term presidential cycle.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano State Government House, where he also advocated for the continued rotation of the presidency between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions.
According to the governor, each region should be given the opportunity to produce a president for two consecutive terms before power shifts to the other region.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Yusuf said.

“We should allow the South to complete its two-term cycle. After that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
The governor argued that allowing each region to complete two presidential terms would provide sufficient time for an administration to implement major policies and development programmes.
He also urged political stakeholders, particularly in the North, to exercise patience and allow the current political arrangement to run its course.
Yusuf’s comments effectively call on northern presidential aspirants seeking to contest the 2027 election to defer their ambitions until the 2031 election cycle.
The governor’s position comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections, with political parties and prospective presidential candidates already making plans for the contest.
