Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to do more to end the frequent attacks and reprisals in parts of Plateau State, saying residents have been forced to live in constant fear of the next attack.
The organisation said Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Riyom and Mangu Local Government Areas have been particularly affected by the recent wave of violence.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page on Sunday, Amnesty said the situation in Plateau State demonstrated what it described as a failure by the authorities to adequately protect residents from attacks.
“The crisis in Plateau State again shows utter failure of the Nigerian authorities to protect the people from vicious attacks,” the organisation said.
Amnesty said insecurity must not be allowed to become a permanent feature of life in rural communities across the state, noting that families sometimes discover additional bodies in bushes while preparing other victims for mass burial.
“At least 1,336 people were killed in Plateau State between December 2023 and February 2024 alone, with continuous attacks, raids and reprisals continuing into 2025 and 2026,” it said.
The organisation urged the government to demonstrate genuine commitment to protecting residents by strengthening security and ensuring justice for victims.
“Consistent failure of the authorities to bring the actual suspected perpetrators to justice is emboldening impunity,” Amnesty said.
