Prince Harry‘s increasingly close relationship with his mother’s family is said to be creating fresh tension within the royal household.
Since returning to the UK with his family, the Duke of Sussex has leaned on his uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, while remaining connected to other members of Princess Diana‘s family.
Now, with tensions surrounding claims made by Diana’s brother about King Charles in his new book, Prince Harry’s closeness to the Spencers is said to be adding another complication to the family dynamic.

Harry has maintained a strong relationship with Earl Spencer, but their connection is said to have become particularly important as the Duke settles back into life in Britain. According to a source, that closeness has not gone unnoticed by King Charles.
“His Majesty loathes Charles Spencer. They have never gotten along, so the fact that Harry is so close to him does give the king good reason to worry,” the insider told Examiner.
The claim comes as Spencer’s new memoir, “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” creates renewed tension between him and his former brother-in-law.
Harry and Spencer are also said to provide considerable personal support to one another. When several copies of Spencer’s memoir were stolen before its publication, the Earl contacted his nephew first.
“They rely on each other in a very father-son way at times,” the source said.
With Harry’s family now back in the UK, the Spencers’ Althorp household has become another place where the Sussex family knows they will be welcomed.
The source claimed there has been discussion about Harry potentially working with Diana’s relatives on charitable projects. This has also added to the palace’s concerns about how close they could become.

The timing of Harry’s growing closeness with his uncle is particularly sensitive because Spencer has made serious allegations about King Charles in his memoir. His account revisits the tense period immediately following Diana’s death in 1997.
Spencer claimed that Charles sounded “giddily elated” during a phone conversation after Diana died. He also said his “demeanor” was like that of a “lottery winner.”
Spencer also alleged that during a separate heated discussion before Diana’s funeral, Charles told him, “We’ll forget her soon enough.”
Buckingham Palace took the unusual step of responding to the claims. In defense of the king, the palace said: “Grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize.”
Meanwhile, an Examiner source described the allegations as deeply upsetting for Charles and claimed the memoir had sent “an absolute tidal wave through the palace.”

“For Harry though, it makes perfect sense because [his mother’s side of the family] have all been nothing but warm and loving to him his entire life,” the Examiner source explained. Along with Spencer, Harry has maintained relationships with his aunts, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale.
According to the insider, Diana’s relatives helped Harry feel that he still had a family connection in Britain, even when relations with Charles and William were at their lowest.
That support has also extended to Meghan and their children. The source said Harry feels the Spencers have welcomed his wife, Archie and Lilibet as family.
Now that the Sussexes are living in Britain again, their relationship with Diana’s side gives them an established support system beyond Harry’s immediate royal relatives.
However, the closeness has also left the King and Prince William “very uncomfortable,” with a source noting: “There’s so much bad blood with Diana’s side of the family; of course it feels like Harry is siding with the enemy. Only the Lord knows what they’re planning together, but the king is bracing for the worst.”
The Duke Remains Keen On Honoring His Mother’s Legacy

“I think there is a perception in the media that I am on Harry’s side,” Spencer said. “Well, I’m on my deceased sister’s sons’ side, both of them.” He added that he would be equally available if either brother needed him and prefers not to choose sides
Spencer acknowledged that there are “a lot of reasons on both sides” behind the brothers reaching their current relationship state. Rather than inserting himself into the dispute, he said he hopes their relationship eventually improves.
“I hope one day it’s resolved,” Spencer told the BBC. He also acknowledged that he does not know every detail behind their rift. Still, he believes Diana would ultimately have wanted William and Harry to be happy together and maintain love for one another. This leaves Spencer hopeful that both of them can eventually find their way back to each other.
