Residents Rush In Numbers With Gallons To Siphon Fuel From Overturned Tanker On Ejisu-Adadientem Stretch
A fuel tanker accident along the Ejisu-Adadientem stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway has drawn crowds of residents rushing to the scene with gallons and other makeshift containers, eager to scoop up fuel spilling from the overturned vehicle.
Footage from the scene shows people converging from different directions, some carrying empty gallons and basins, all moving toward the wreckage in hopes of collecting whatever fuel they could salvage before it either evaporated, soaked into the ground, or was cleared away by emergency responders.
While the free fuel may seem like an unexpected windfall to those rushing in, scenes like this carry serious, often underappreciated dangers.
Spilled fuel remains highly flammable, and a single spark, whether from a phone, a vehicle, or even static electricity amid a crowd, can trigger a catastrophic explosion.
Similar tanker incidents elsewhere in West Africa have turned deadly in the past precisely because of large crowds gathering to siphon fuel from crash sites, unaware of just how quickly such situations can turn fatal.
At the time of this report, the person who recorded the video at our disposal was calling on the Ghana National Fire Service to report to the scene and curb any unforeseen situations likely to happen.
However, we cannot tell exactly if they have arrived at the scene now.
