Tony Romo is connecting his painful past with his present woes!
The former American football player has added a deeper context to the reason for his decision to file a no-contest plea, explaining that his previous injuries led to a phase in his life he has now become ashamed of.
Tony Romo was arrested on July 23, 2026, in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, with officers noting that he performed poorly on a field sobriety test. However, he was eventually released later that same night.
The former NFL star took to Instagram to issue a statement on his latest plea, admitting that the whole episode and arrest were a personal failure on his own end. Romo noted that the multiple back surgeries he went in for during his active years as a footballer, which eventually led to his early retirement, forced him into a dark corner.
He recalled being left with a constant, debilitating pain which resulted in a toxic dependence on pain medication, and his efforts to get over them pushed him further down into the abyss of alcohol addiction.
Romo explained that he has always taught his three young sons about getting back up when they fall short of expectations and taking full responsibility for whatever damage is done.
“That is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the changes necessary to move forward. That path requires honesty,” the former NFL player stressed.
Romo admitted that the last months have been difficult for him, yet significant because he was forced to confront his past and own up to his mistakes before God, himself, his family, and the public.
The sports icon reassured the public that he has teamed up with experienced health professionals to address his health and help him make necessary changes.
He expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, and the NFL community for encouraging him behind the scenes. Romo required the public to treat his matter with utmost privacy and respect as he takes his time to get better and return to his job at CBS.

As stated by Page Six, the former athlete was found guilty of his OWI charge, to which he pleaded no contest in a court in Wisconsin on Tuesday, September 1. Consequently, the court revoked the former footballer’s driving license for six months, ordering that an ignition interlock be installed on any automobile registered in his name.
He was also instructed to complete the Alcohol Assessment Program alongside a fine of $784 for court costs and a $50 fine. Failure to remit these payments may lead to a one-year loss for Romo’s license.
However, the former NFL star would not have to worry about the unsafe passing on the right and possession of open intoxicants charges, as they were thrown out. Romo played his entire 14-year career with the Dallas Cowboys and was known for his improvised playmaking, high passer rating, and late-game comebacks.
The footballer’s journey was laced with severe injuries, including multiple collarbone fractures and a back compression fracture in 2016, forcing him to retire from the team in April 2017, officially.

The cops pulled over the NFL player while he drove southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee and had made a dangerous pass to the right, cutting across the gore. The Blast noted that during questioning, Romo had told the officer he was coming from a golf course after he earlier branched at his grandparents’ home.
He added that he had been participating in a golf competition and responded in the negative when asked if he had been consuming alcohol. Romo then asked if he could call his lawyer, amid multiple requests that he step out of his vehicle.
In a later account, the deputy claimed officers on the scene claimed that Romo had red, glassy eyes during their entire conversation alongside a strong stench of alcohol in his breath. She continued that they also spotted a few cans of alcohol in his backpack, and he denied consuming any of the contents in the shooters.
