Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced plans to end its operations in Nigeria after 12 years of providing transportation services to customers across the country.
The company made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, revealing that it would wind down its Nigerian operations effective immediately following a thorough review of its business.
Uber launched its services in Lagos in 2014 and said it was grateful to Nigerians for trusting its platform to connect them with independent transportation providers for daily commutes, visits to loved ones and other journeys.
The company said:
“We have made the difficult decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria effective September 2, 2026, following a thorough review of our business.”
Uber acknowledged that its exit could disrupt the routines of customers who have relied on the platform for their transportation needs and apologised for the inconvenience.
The company also assured users that its Help Centre would remain available until September 23, 2026, to assist with any final account-related enquiries.
The announcement has since generated reactions from Nigerians, particularly customers and drivers who have used the platform since it launched in the country.
Some users expressed disappointment over the decision, while others reminisced about Uber’s impact on Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry over the past 12 years.
