The US Department of State provides the B-1 visa as an option for amateur or professional athletes traveling to compete for prize money.
Athletes coming to compete on a professional level may alternatively qualify for the P-1 or O visa categories.
Athletes should be aware of the four important conditions listed below.
1. Choosing the right visa category
The first prerequisite is to confirm that the visa type requested is appropriate for the travel.
A professional athlete traveling for a qualifying competition may require a P-1 visa, whereas someone of exceptional skill or achievement may qualify for an O visa.
Athletes competing solely for prize money at specific events may fall into the B-1 category instead. Using a visitor visa to carry out employment-related activities is not permitted.
The State Department has made it plain that B-1/B-2 tourist visas do not authorize employment in the United States.
2. Meeting sporting eligibility requirements
Athletes asking for a P-1 visa must meet specified athletic requirements.
According to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a P-1 internationally recognized athlete must have an internationally recognized reputation and be traveling to participate in a sports tournament with a distinguished reputation that requires an athlete of that caliber.
3. Securing the necessary petition or paperwork
The majority of professional athlete visas are petition-based, which means that the athlete must first find a qualified US petitioner.
According to the State Department, most temporary worker visa applicants must submit an approved petition, which is reviewed by USCIS.
Applicants must also gather supporting documents, such as a valid passport, a DS-160 confirmation form, and, if applicable, the petition receipt number.
The specific paperwork necessary may fluctuate depending on the athlete’s visa category and personal circumstances.
4. Proving the trip is genuine
Athletes must also meet the larger requirements for the specific visa they are applying for.
For many temporary visa applicants, this entails demonstrating that the intended stay is temporary and, if necessary, demonstrating ties to their native country.
The State Department states that appropriate evidence may include proof of domicile, family links, economic situations, and long-term aspirations.
Applicants must also finish the entire application process, pay the applicable costs, and attend a visa interview as needed.
