Why I Returned N25m Late Actor Ogogo Kept in My Custody —Ilaro Chief Imam

Sheikh Tajudeen Abiodun, the Chief Imam of Ilaro, hometown of late actor Alhaji Taiwo Hassan Ogogo, has broken his silence over N25m that the deceased actor kept with him.

Imam Tajudeen drew public attention after returning N25 million belonging to the family of late veteran actor Ogogo and explained what led to his decision and addressed the reactions that followed.

The cleric made headlines during Ogogo’s burial ceremony when he revealed publicly that he had returned the money to the actor’s family.

His disclosure sparked questions and discussions, prompting him to provide more details about the circumstances surrounding the funds.

In a video shared by the BBC on Instagram on Monday, September 7, 2026, the Imam said he lived only four houses away from Ogogo and was closely involved during the actor’s final days.

He recalled visiting the veteran actor at the intensive care unit of LASU Hospital before later visiting him at St Nicholas Hospital, where he had been transferred for further treatment.

Although Ogogo was reportedly in a critical condition during both visits, the Imam said he continued to pray for him.

According to the cleric, Ogogo personally contacted him while he was still alive and entrusted him with N25 million.

The Imam clarified that contrary to speculation, the money was not meant for the construction of a mosque. He explained that Ogogo had specifically intended the funds to be used to renovate his grandfather’s house in Ogun State.

After receiving the money, the Imam said he contacted one of his sons, explained the purpose of the funds and instructed that the arrangement be recorded for documentation.

He said this was done as a precaution in case anything unexpected happened. He also informed Ogogo’s younger brother about the money and its intended purpose.

Following Ogogo’s burial, the Imam said he waited seven days before meeting with the actor’s children and other family members. He explained the circumstances surrounding the money and discussed what should be done with the funds.

After deliberations, the family reportedly agreed that the N25 million should be transferred to Ogogo’s elder brother.

The Imam added that “he personally accompanied one of the family members to the bank to ensure the transfer was completed, bringing clarity to the handling of the money that had been entrusted to him by the late actor.”
