A Nigerian social media user has apologized after admitting she used artificial intelligence to fabricate an image showing an itel Power Tank exploding and spread it online.
Enori posted the false claim online earlier in the week, saying the portable power station had exploded from overcharging.
She later deleted the post and issued a public apology admitting the incident never happened and was created entirely using AI.
In her apology, Enori said she regretted the fabrication and never intended for it to spread so widely.
She acknowledged understanding what it feels like to have a brand damaged by false claims and assured the itel team and customers that she would never repeat such an act.
She confirmed the image was not a photograph of any real incident and urged people who may have believed it to disregard the false information.
itel responded to the fake image by warning it would pursue legal action against anyone deliberately using fabricated or AI-generated content to spread false information about its products.
The company said in a statement it would not tolerate attempts to discredit its brand or mislead customers through fabricated materials or false claims.
The Power Tank is a portable power backup device featuring lithium iron phosphate batteries and multiple safety protections including battery management, temperature controls, voltage protection and overload safeguards.
No verified incident involving the product matches the fabricated image.
