2027 Elections: IGP Disu Promises Professional Police Conduct Before, During, After Polls

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force will maintain professional conduct before, during and after the 2027 general elections.

Disu pledged that the force would improve on its previous electoral performances, expressing confidence that its conduct during the forthcoming polls would earn the trust and pride of Nigerians.

The Press Nigeria reports that the police chief gave the assurance while speaking with journalists after the launch of *The Origin of Women in Nigeria Police Force*, a book written by 96-year-old retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dame Stella Okuyiga.

Disu disclosed that the police had recently convened a conference involving commissioners of police from across the country and other senior officers to assess preparations for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the meeting provided an opportunity to review the force’s performance during previous elections, identify areas of success and address operational shortcomings ahead of the next nationwide polls.

He said the experience gathered from recent elections would help the police strengthen their approach to election security and improve professional standards.

“I want to let you know that we just finished a conference of all commissioners of police and other senior officers. We have had two or three elections recently, and you can see the police did very well, and we did too,” the IGP said.

“We have now brought all these experiences together, where we did well and where we did not do well, so that we can perform better in this big election that everybody is looking up to.”

Reaffirming his confidence in the force, Disu added: “I give you my word. Nigeria Police will do so well, and we will make Nigeria Police so proud, and we will make Nigerians proud.”

The assurance comes as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, when the conduct of security agencies will be crucial to protecting voters, electoral officials, candidates and election materials.

However, the credibility of the police’s commitment will ultimately depend on its implementation, particularly in ensuring impartiality, preventing voter intimidation, responding to electoral violence and protecting the rights of citizens regardless of their political affiliations.

The force’s handling of complaints, its response to politically motivated violence and the accountability of officers deployed to polling units will be important measures of whether the IGP’s promise translates into public confidence.

Disu’s pledge therefore places renewed attention on the police leadership’s responsibility to ensure that security operations during the 2027 elections are guided by professionalism, neutrality and respect for the rule of law.
