The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that Artificial Intelligence will be used to assist in verifying election results ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, made this known while speaking on the commission’s Artificial Intelligence governance and preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to him, the commission has established a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Division within its ICT department as part of efforts to improve the integrity of the electoral process.

Amupitan also said automated AI auditing tools had already been integrated into the commission’s Results Management process to identify discrepancies and administrative errors before final verification.
“Automated AI auditing tools have been integrated into our results verification process under a five-pillar AI governance framework, operating under the mandatory human oversight.”
He added that an AI governance policy was being finalised by the commission.
The INEC chairman stressed that the technology would not independently determine election results, as every automated check would remain subject to human auditing and legal verification.
On cybersecurity, Amupitan said the commission was working with international technology partners to strengthen its digital infrastructure and protect its systems against cyber threats.
“In partnership with international technology leaders and partners, we’re integrating our AI-driven anomaly detection tools to monitor database traffic and shield our public portals against cyber intrusions or unauthorized alterations,” he said.
