Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has said he would restore fuel subsidy and tackle corruption if elected, arguing that corruption is a major problem linked to the subsidy system.
Obi made the statement during a new interview while discussing his position on fuel subsidy and corruption.
According to him, he had spoken about the issue from the beginning and would reverse the current policy if given the opportunity to lead the country.
“If I win, I’ll bring back fuel subsidy and I’ll remove the corruption. From day one I talked about subsidy, I talked about the corruption, the corruption is the problem is the subsidy so If I win, I’ll bring back fuel subsidy and I’ll remove the corruption,” Obi said.
His comment has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some Nigerians expressing support for his position while others questioned his proposal to restore fuel subsidy.
One user said they would continue to support Obi regardless of whether he contests the election again, while another described him as confused over the subsidy issue.
Other reactions focused on Obi’s political affiliation and his reported description by the BBC as an ADC presidential candidate.
