Houthis claim missile attack on Riyadh airport as Yemen conflict escalates

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement has claimed responsibility for a new ballistic missile attack targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, escalating tensions as fighting between the group and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces intensifies.
The Houthis said on Thursday that they had launched a ballistic missile at the airport. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the latest attack or reported casualties or damage from it.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group’s forces had “successfully targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with a ballistic missile,” claiming that the missile struck its target and disrupted airport operations.
The latest claim follows two earlier attacks on Saudi airports that authorities say killed three people and injured 36 others.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation said two women, one Moroccan and one Algerian, were killed and 28 people injured in an attack on Abha International Airport.
At King Khalid International Airport, a Sudanese resident was killed and eight others were injured. The injured included Saudi, Egyptian and Pakistani nationals.
The authority said emergency teams responded immediately and that efforts were underway to assess the damage and protect passengers and airport operations.
“GACA is working, in coordination with the relevant authorities, to assess the damage, verify the safety of the facilities, and take the necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of operations,” the authority said.

The attacks come as Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces continue fighting Houthi fighters amid a renewed escalation in Yemen.
The conflict has also raised concerns over the security of the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a major maritime route linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
The Houthis have claimed several attacks against Saudi targets in recent days, while the Saudi-led coalition has carried out strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.
The fight is drawing greater regional attention as Saudi Arabia seeks additional military and defensive support.
The escalation also comes amid broader tensions across the Middle East, with attacks affecting civilian infrastructure and important transport routes.
The Houthis have separately warned international airlines against operating in Saudi airspace, according to reports, increasing concerns over the safety of commercial aviation in the region.
