Kaduna locks down as Tinubu opens 2027 campaign

President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign opened in Kaduna on Saturday under tight security, with road closures and traffic gridlock highlighting the logistical cost of hosting a major political rally in a busy city.

Tinubu arrived in Kaduna State ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off, accompanied by preparations for the ruling party to present its “Renewed Hope 2.0” agenda to voters.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima and his wife, Nana, also arrived for the event, according to a statement by Shettima’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha.

Among those who received the President at the airport were APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, campaign Director-General Abdul’aziz Yari and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

Party governors, elected officials, political leaders and supporters gathered at Kaduna Township Stadium for the launch, which the APC described as the starting point of its nationwide campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

“The stage is set. Kaduna is ready. The 2027 campaign begins!” Nkwocha’s statement said.

Security preparations disrupt city movement

Security agencies deployed personnel across strategic locations in Kaduna ahead of the President’s movement and the rally.

The Nigerian Army (NA), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KSVS) were stationed at major roundabouts and roads leading to the venue.

Muhammadu Buhari Way, formerly known as WAFF Road, was barricaded ahead of the expected presidential convoy. Security personnel also took positions around the Ahmadu Bello Stadium roundabout.

The restrictions triggered heavy traffic, with congestion reportedly stretching from Junction Road to Ahmadu Bello Way.

The measures reflected the security demands of a high-profile political gathering. However, the disruption also exposed the burden that road closures can place on residents, commuters, businesses and other road users who may have no direct connection to the event.

The available report did not specify how long the restrictions would last, whether alternative routes were provided or how many commuters were affected.

The campaign’s real test begins after the rally

The APC intends to use the campaign to promote the Tinubu administration’s “Renewed Hope 2.0” agenda and showcase its record in office.

Even though, a successful launch and a large gathering cannot, on their own, establish the level of public support the party will receive at the polls.

As the 2027 contest approaches, voters will assess the administration against issues that shape daily life, including food prices, employment, security, transport costs and access to essential services.

The ruling party must therefore connect its campaign promises to measurable outcomes that Nigerians can evaluate.

Kaduna’s role as the launch venue also carries political significance in the North-West, a key electoral region. The rally gives the APC an opportunity to mobilise supporters, strengthen party organisation and communicate its message before the campaign reaches other parts of the country.

For residents caught in Saturday’s traffic disruption, however, the immediate concern was practical: how quickly normal movement could resume.

The campaign has begun. Its ultimate measure will be whether the APC can convert its political mobilisation into voter confidence in February 2027.
