NAFDAC Clarifies: No Registration Number Needed for Unpackaged Zobo Drinks

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified that Zobo drinks sold in ordinary, unpackaged containers do not require NAFDAC registration numbers under the agency’s stated regulatory position.
The clarification follows a viral video showing police officers questioning a Zobo vendor over the absence of a NAFDAC registration number.
According to the agency’s explanation, Zobo and similar drinks sold without packaging, sealing or labelling fall outside this specific registration requirement.
However, when such drinks are packaged, sealed and labelled for sale, they become subject to NAFDAC’s regulatory oversight and applicable requirements.
The clarification has drawn attention to the distinction between traditionally prepared drinks sold directly to consumers and commercially packaged beverages.
Consumers and vendors are encouraged to understand the applicable food-safety and regulatory requirements to avoid confusion and ensure compliance with the law.
