Nigeria condemns Riyadh airport attack that reportedly killed 12 civilians

The Federal Government has condemned an attack by Houthi militia on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The attack took place on Saturday, 10 October 2026. It reportedly killed 12 civilians and left more than 300 people injured.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja announced Nigeria’s position on Sunday, 11 October 2026. The statement, numbered MFA/PR/2026/267, was signed by the ministry’s spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.

Nigeria’s position on the attack

Nigeria considers the incident “a dangerous escalation”, meaning a step that makes a conflict worse. The statement says the attack ignores the safety of civilian life. It also says the attack violates the sovereignty of Saudi Arabia, which is the country’s right to govern itself.

The government adds that the attack undermines ongoing work to promote peace, security and stability in the Middle East.

Nigeria expressed solidarity with the government and people of Saudi Arabia. It sent condolences to the families of those who died. It also wished the injured a speedy and full recovery.

The government praised Saudi Arabia for its prompt emergency response after the incident. It also acknowledged the kingdom’s sustained work to protect its security and the lives and well-being of its people.

Appeal to all sides

Nigeria repeated its appeal to all parties to respect international law and show utmost restraint. It asked them to avoid any further action that could raise tensions, put civilian lives at risk, damage civilian infrastructure or weaken regional peace and security.

The statement also stressed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia. Territorial integrity means a country’s borders must be respected. It said international law must be upheld, particularly the duty to protect civilian lives and safeguard critical infrastructure.
