- His comments address the influence of religion on political leadership and elections.
Bishop David Oyedepo has called on Nigerians to reject the idea that any religious or ethnic group has exclusive ownership of the country.
The founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners’ Chapel, made the remarks while speaking on the issue of Nigeria’s political leadership and the role of religion in determining who should be elected.
Oyedepo challenged the claim that Nigerians should not vote for a Christian candidate, questioning who had the authority to decide who could govern the country.
He stressed that Nigeria belongs to all its citizens, irrespective of their religious or ethnic backgrounds.
The cleric also rejected the notion that Muslims or any particular ethnic group have greater ownership of the country, insisting that Nigerians are equal stakeholders in the nation.
Oyedepo said: “Don’t vote for a Christian, we won’t give it to a Christian. Who’re you to give it? Muslims don’t own Nigeria, we’re not tenants to the Fulanis,no Nigerian is more Nigerian than others. We own this country together. Politicians don’t own the nation, Nigerians own the Nation.”
His comments have drawn attention as discussions around religion, ethnicity and political leadership continue to feature prominently in Nigeria’s public discourse.
