Obi-Kwankwaso ticket builds 118-member election war room

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has assembled a 118-member National Campaign Council for the 2027 general election, appointing Ibrahim Abdulkarim, an ally of presidential candidate Peter Obi, as director-general of its campaign machinery.
The council brings together party leaders, political figures and campaign officials under the leadership of former Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, who will serve as chairman. Obi will be co-chairman, while NDC National Chairman Cleopas Zuwoghe will act as vice-chairman.
The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has been named co-vice-chairman, placing both figures at the centre of the structure tasked with coordinating the NDC’s nationwide election campaign.
The appointments were announced in a statement issued on Sunday night. The council is scheduled for formal inauguration in Abuja on Monday.
Abdulkarim, an information and communications strategist and businessman from Kaduna State, previously contested the NDC governorship primary in the state but did not secure the party’s ticket. His appointment now places him in charge of coordinating the presidential campaign’s operational activities.
The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, will serve as council secretary, while former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has been named chairman of the National Campaign Advisory Council and a member of the National Campaign Caucus.

Other figures listed in the campaign structure include Deputy National Chairmen Sidi Bomi Abdul and Babatunde F. Alli, alongside former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege and Senator Victor Umeh as representatives of the party’s Senate caucus.
Victor Ogene will chair the NDC House of Representatives Caucus, while National Woman Leader Dudu Manuga will serve on the campaign council.
The party has also assigned communications responsibilities to its media team. National Spokesperson Osa Director will head media and communication, with Ikeddi Isiguzo as deputy director. Constance Ikokwu has been appointed campaign spokesperson.
The NDC said the council would deliver a “people-centred and issue-based campaign” ahead of the 2027 elections. It added that the body would coordinate activities across the country and mobilise support for the party’s vision of a “new, just, and prosperous Nigeria”.
The appointments follow the party’s decision to allow Obi and Kwankwaso to nominate preferred leaders for the campaign structure. Their positions at the top of the ticket, alongside the responsibilities assigned to established party figures, will shape how the NDC distributes political authority and organises its election effort.
However, the announcement of a 118-member council is only the opening step. The structure’s effectiveness will depend on how its members coordinate across states, build local campaign networks and translate the party’s message into voter support.
The coming months will test whether the NDC can turn its leadership arrangement into a disciplined national campaign, with clear responsibilities for mobilisation, communication and policy messaging before Nigerians head to the polls in 2027.
