Ogun gas emission: 30 students treated as odour spreads beyond schools

An unexplained gaseous odour has affected students and residents across parts of Ogun’s Ijebu axis, prompting hospital treatment, school disruptions and a joint investigation by state authorities and petroleum regulators.

More than 30 students received medical attention after an unusual gaseous odour spread across parts of Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo, and Ago-Iwoye as it has raised fresh questions about the source of recurring emissions in Ogun State.

The Ogun State Government said on Wednesday that the situation was under control, but investigations were continuing to establish what caused the incident and whether it posed further health or environmental risks.

The affected students reportedly experienced shortness of breath, stomach disorders and drowsiness. Some required oxygen to stabilise their conditions, while others received less intensive treatment.

Most of the students treated at the General Hospital had been discharged by the time a government assessment team completed its visit. A few were still under medical observation.

The incident disrupted activities in some schools, while reports indicated that students from other institutions were also taken to separate hospitals.

Odour reaches beyond school grounds

The spread of reports beyond school premises has become a significant part of the investigation.

After visiting the General Hospital, the government team inspected Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School and surrounding locations to assess the incident and search for possible sources of the odour.

The assessment found that the phenomenon was not confined to classrooms or school compounds. Residents in neighbouring communities also reported perceiving it, while the chairman of Ijebu North Local Government Area confirmed that the odour was noticed at the council secretariat.

A team from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) also arrived to participate in the assessment and investigation.

The involvement of petroleum regulators adds a technical dimension to the inquiry. However, their presence does not establish that the emission originated from an oil or gas facility. Investigators must identify the substance and trace its source before drawing conclusions.

Recurring incidents raise new questions

Wednesday’s episode has revived concerns about similar reports from the Ijebu axis since April 2026.

Ogun Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, previously attributed earlier occurrences to natural underground gas emissions associated with geological and tectonic fault lines. He ruled out sabotage and a gas pipeline leak as explanations for those incidents.

That earlier assessment does not, by itself, establish the cause of Wednesday’s episode. Authorities have yet to disclose a confirmed source for the latest incident or identify the substance responsible.

The distinction matters because the appropriate response depends on the gas or chemical involved. Without verified findings, residents cannot reliably assess the level of danger or know whether particular locations require special precautions.

What residents need to know

The government has asked residents to stay calm while investigations continue. However, clear public communication will be essential, particularly if further exposure is possible.

Residents who experience breathing difficulties or other sudden symptoms should move away from the affected area if it is safe to do so and seek urgent medical attention. Anyone experiencing severe breathing problems should contact emergency services.

New Daily Prime’s assessment: The issue has gone beyond whether the odour has subsided. Authorities, as it stands now, need to establish its chemical composition, identify the source, determine why similar incidents have recurred, and publish verified findings.

Until those questions are answered, assurances that the situation is under control cannot substitute for a clear explanation of what affected students and residents breathed and what measures will prevent another episode.
