Tinubu hails veteran editor Bonuola at 80

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated veteran journalist Oyinlade “Ladbone” Bonuola on his 80th birthday and praised his decades of service to Nigerian journalism and his contribution to editorial leadership, professional integrity and public accountability.
In a birthday message released on Sunday, Tinubu described Bonuola as one of Nigeria’s most respected media figures, whose career spanning more than five decades has helped shape the country’s journalism landscape.
The President commended the veteran editor for his commitment to truth, editorial courage and the public interest. He noted that his professional contributions extended beyond reporting to mentoring younger journalists and influencing the language and practice of journalism in Nigeria.
“Your career reflects a profound belief that journalism must serve the public interest, hold leaders accountable, and give citizens the information they need to make informed decisions,” Tinubu said.
He also praised Bonuola’s lasting influence on the media industry, describing him as “one of the 20th century’s exceptional editors”.
“At 80, you stand tall as one of Nigeria’s most respected figures in journalism, a man whose professional excellence, editorial courage, integrity, and commitment to the truth have left an enduring imprint on the nation’s media landscape,” the President said.

Bonuola, a former Managing Director of Guardian Newspapers Limited, built a career spanning more than 50 years in the media industry. His work in editorial leadership and newsroom management placed him among the experienced figures who helped shape professional journalism in Nigeria.
Tinubu’s tribute also highlighted the responsibility that comes with editorial authority, particularly the need to protect accuracy, uphold ethical standards and ensure that journalism serves citizens rather than narrow interests.
The recognition comes at a time when news organisations face mounting challenges, including misinformation, declining public trust and pressure to deliver information rapidly across digital platforms. These conditions have intensified the need for experienced editors who can balance speed with verification and public interest with professional independence.
Bonuola’s career, as described in the President’s message, reflects the importance of editorial judgement and mentorship in sustaining those standards. Experienced journalists play a role in transferring newsroom knowledge to younger reporters, from verifying claims and questioning official accounts to presenting information clearly and responsibly.
Tinubu wished Bonuola continued good health and fulfilment as he marked the milestone, celebrating a career he said had left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s media landscape.
The President’s message placed particular emphasis on journalism’s democratic responsibility: informing citizens, scrutinising those in power and maintaining the credibility on which public confidence depends.
