Obi condemns Delta State violence against Obidient members

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned violent attacks directed at coordinators and members of the Obidient Movement and the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Delta State.

Obi released a statement on Saturday regarding the security incidents that targeted citizens exercising their democratic rights.

Obi stated that political violence lacks any room in a democracy. He declared:

“No political aspiration is worth the life of a Nigerian, and no dispute should be resolved through intimidation, physical attacks, or the destruction of property.”

Calls for immediate police investigation

Obi noted that authority must come from public trust rather than thuggery and fear. He stated that it troubles him when individuals try to secure influence through such means during a time when the country needs responsible leadership.

“It is particularly troubling that, at a time when Nigeria urgently needs responsible leadership, some individuals continue to believe that political influence can be secured through thuggery, fear, and violence. Political authority should be attained through persuasion and the trust of the people, not by intimidating opponents,” Obi said.

He asked the Government and security agencies to launch an immediate and thorough investigation.

Defence of democratic freedom

Obi promised that his group will remain peaceful, lawful, and determined. He stated:

“We will not be intimidated or silenced, nor will we relinquish our democratic space to violence.”

He added that no single individual or political party owns the democratic space. Every citizen holds the right to organise, gather, express views, and freely elect leaders.
