Tension broke out at the popular Farm Centre phone market in Kano after about 200 suspected thugs stormed the area, attacking traders and stealing goods.
The attackers, said to be armed with cutlasses and other weapons, were allegedly accompanying a Kano Central senatorial aspirant, Abdussalam Abdulkareem (AA Zaura), to an event at a nearby hotel.
The market chairman, Jamilu Bala Gama, said the incident happened around 1:25 pm, adding that the violence also spread to nearby markets such as City Centre and New Dubai.
“They were many, about 200 or even more. They attacked innocent people and marketers, injuring them and stealing their property,” he alleged.
Traders were forced to shut down their shops and flee as the attackers remained around the event area.
Gama said such incidents are becoming common, accusing politicians of moving with armed thugs and causing unrest.
“We plan to take legal action against politicians generating tension in our markets by moving around with hoodlums,” he added.
He also said police officers who responded to the scene were attacked, with some reportedly injured.
