South Africa produced a spirited comeback to secure a crucial 1-1 draw against Czech Republic in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to a late penalty from Teboho Mokoena at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With both teams searching for their first points of the tournament, the result leaves qualification hopes alive heading into the final round of group matches.
Czech Republic strike early
The Europeans made a bright start and needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. A quick attack down the right flank saw Adam Hložek cut the ball back into a dangerous area, where Alexandr Sojka set up Michal Sadílek, who calmly lifted his finish beyond Ronwen Williams.

The goal was the fastest scored at the tournament so far and gave Czech Republic the perfect start after their opening defeat to South Korea.
South Africa show resilience
Still hurting from their 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in their first match, Bafana Bafana responded positively. Oswin Appollis came close with a long-range effort that was deflected behind, while Thapelo Maseko looked threatening whenever he found space in the final third.
Despite enjoying spells of possession, South Africa struggled to create clear-cut chances before halftime, with Czech Republic maintaining their narrow advantage.
Drama in the closing stages
The second half saw South Africa increase the pressure, with Relebohile Mofokeng introduced to add creativity in attack.
However, Czech Republic looked the more likely side to score next. Vladimír Darida saw an effort blocked from close range, while Lukáš Červ forced a fine save from Williams. Patrik Schick also threatened but could not find a way past the South African goalkeeper.
Just when it seemed Czech Republic would hold on for all three points, South Africa were handed a lifeline in the 83rd minute. A Maseko strike struck the arm of substitute Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area, and after the referee pointed to the spot, Teboho Mokoena stepped up and confidently converted the penalty, sending goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way.
A point that keeps both teams alive
Neither side could find a winner in the closing minutes, although Evidence Makgopa had a late chance for South Africa that was comfortably saved by Kovář.
For South Africa, the draw represents a massive boost after a difficult start to the tournament. The point keeps Bafana Bafana firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stages ahead of their decisive final group match against South Korea.
Czech Republic, meanwhile, will feel disappointed not to have protected their lead but remain alive in the competition. They now face a must-win clash against Mexico as they look to secure progression from Group A.
With both teams sitting on one point after two matches, the battle for qualification remains wide open.
