The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has concluded a humanitarian assessment mission to evaluate the condition of stranded West African migrants in Libya as part of efforts to address the growing migration crisis in the Maghreb region.
The mission was conducted in compliance with the decision of the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, directing the Commission to urgently address the plight of ECOWAS citizens stranded in Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia.
Led by Mr. Usman Obeche, the ECOWAS delegation assessed the humanitarian situation of migrants of ECOWAS origin in Libya, engaged with key stakeholders, and explored possible interventions to alleviate their challenges.
During the visit, according to a statement on Friday, the delegation held consultations with relevant Libyan authorities, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Libya, ECOWAS, and other African diplomatic missions, as well as leaders of organised African migrant communities.
The team also visited the Tajoura Detention Centre in Tripoli, where it interacted with detained migrants to gain first-hand insight into their living conditions and humanitarian needs.
The Libya mission is the first of three planned assessment visits to Maghreb countries, with similar missions scheduled for Algeria and Tunisia as ECOWAS intensifies efforts to protect the rights and welfare of stranded West African migrants in the region.
