ECOWAS Moves To Strengthen Regional Aviation Oversight With Inaugural Committee Meeting

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is set to inaugurate its Air Transport Economic Oversight Committee (ECATEOC) at a meeting scheduled for July 2–3, 2026, in Lomé.

The meeting marks the operational launch of the regional economic oversight mechanism established under Supplementary Act A/SA.2/12/24, which provides a framework for regulating charges, taxes and fees in civil aviation across the ECOWAS region, a statement said on Monday.

According to the Commission, the committee will bring together senior aviation policymakers, regulators, industry stakeholders and development partners to advance reforms aimed at making air transport more affordable, competitive and efficient.

The discussions are expected to focus on reducing the cost of air travel, improving connectivity among ECOWAS member states, harmonising aviation regulations and strengthening the implementation of regional air transport policies.

The inauguration of the committee represents another milestone in ECOWAS’ efforts to deepen regional integration and promote sustainable economic growth through a more accessible and integrated aviation sector, in line with the objectives of the Economic Community of West African States Vision 2050.
