Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has unveiled a major Medical City project aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery, reducing outbound medical travel and positioning the state as a hub for specialised healthcare services.
The project was unveiled in Uyo by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, during a ceremony attended by healthcare professionals and industry stakeholders.Governor Eno also disclosed that the state recruited 2,844 health workers over the past year to address personnel shortages and support the expansion of healthcare services across the state.
According to the governor, the Medical City will occupy about 100 hectares and feature a 10-storey complex housing 62 medical specialties equipped with advanced medical technology.“This project is an investment in the future health and prosperity of our people,” Eno said, adding that the facility is expected to create jobs and contribute to economic growth.
Speaking at the event, Pate described the project as a significant contribution to healthcare development and commended the state government’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare.
Project Manager Dr. Teinye Isokariari said the facility would be built to international standards and supported by 356 foundation piles for structural stability. He added that 100 Akwa Ibom indigenes would undergo specialised training abroad before the facility becomes operational to prepare them to manage advanced medical equipment. The National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Bala Audu, also commended the state government’s investments in healthcare, including initiatives aimed at improving workforce retention.
