Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced plans to introduce a Workers’ Housing Scheme designed to provide affordable homes for serving and retired civil servants across the state.The governor made the announcement in Asaba during the Delta State Public Service Lecture, held as part of activities marking the 2026 International Public Service Week celebration. He was represented by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme.
According to Oborevwori, the initiative responds to longstanding requests from labour unions and workers’ groups for affordable housing to address accommodation challenges facing public servants.He said the state government is working with the Ministry of Housing, the Delta State Mortgage Trust Bank, and private-sector partners to develop a phased housing programme.
The scheme is expected to prioritise serving workers and retirees, with flexible payment options tailored to workers’ income levels.The governor also pledged to strengthen existing welfare programmes, including housing and vehicle loan schemes, and said the Workers’ Owner-Occupier Housing Scheme would be revitalised through partnerships with real estate developers.
Speaking on the theme, “Reforms, Resilience and Results,” Oborevwori described civil servants as essential to governance and the implementation of the administration’s M.O.R.E Agenda.He highlighted regular salary and pension payments, public sector reforms, and investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and rural development as part of efforts to improve service delivery.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to digital transformation and capacity-building within the public service. Earlier, guest lecturer Dr. Caroline Ajuyah and Head of Service Dr. Mininim Oseji commended the administration’s support for public service development and workers’ welfare.
