The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
June 12 remains a significant date in Nigeria’s history, set aside in honour of the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic governance in the country.
According to a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the preservation of democratic ideals, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.
The statement noted that the administration remains committed to upholding these principles without compromise.
The Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, said it will continue to maintain and strengthen internal security measures to safeguard lives and property across the country.
The Minister called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day holiday as an opportunity for civic reflection and to renew their commitment to lawful conduct, national unity and responsible citizenship.
“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the Minister stated.
