INEC: Stay impartial, protect people’s will to boost confidence in democracy – Goronyo

Sokoto, June 10, 2026 (NAN) Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, has urged the nation’s electoral umpire to remain impartial by upholding the principles of fairness, transparency, and justice while discharging its constitutional responsibilities.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the will of the people “is respected at all times”, thereby strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

Goronyo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Wednesday, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration.

“I want to call on INEC to remain impartial and uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and justice in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

“Similarly, I want to call on leaders at all levels to intensify efforts to address the country’s security challenges, particularly in Northern Nigeria,.

“I would also use this medium to commend the Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance,” he said.

The chairman observed that the country’s democratic journey had recorded significant achievements since the return to civilian rule.

Goronyo noted that democracy had continued to provide citizens with the opportunity to freely express their views and participate in governance.

He, however, observed that persistent insecurity in many parts of the North remained a major threat to the gains of democracy.

“The democratic system has continued to provide the best opportunity for Nigerians to express their views and aspirations.

“However, security challenges, especially in Northern Nigeria, have continued to escalate beyond imagination,” he said.

Goronyo expressed concern over increasing incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality, describing them as setbacks to the nation’s democratic development.

He said security had become a critical issue that political leaders must prioritise to ensure the sustainability and success of democracy in the country.

The PDP chairman also urged voters to play their part by electing leaders with the vision, commitment, and capacity to tackle insecurity and strengthen democratic institutions in the upcoming 2027 general elections

“As the 2027 elections approach, the electorate must choose leaders who genuinely care about the people and possess the wisdom and determination to safeguard and strengthen democracy,” he advised.

Goronyo reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote peace, security, and democratic governance across the country. (NAN)
