The Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the state government to provide comprehensive insurance cover for practicing journalists following a road accident involving members of the Correspondents’ Chapel.
The accident occurred on Saturday along the Obajana–Kabba Road as the journalists were returning from an official assignment in Ekirin-Ade, Ijumu Local Government Area. The council said the journalists survived the incident, although some sustained injuries.
In a statement jointly signed by the council’s Chairman, Alhaji Ademu Seidu Haruna, and Secretary, Dr. Atuluku Samuel, the NUJ described insurance coverage as essential, citing the occupational risks journalists face while carrying out their duties.The council urged the Kogi State Government to introduce a comprehensive insurance policy for practicing journalists, saying it would improve morale, strengthen professionalism, and demonstrate commitment to the welfare of media practitioners.
The statement also called on relevant authorities to strengthen enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly against drivers of heavy-duty trucks operating along the Obajana Road. It expressed concern over what it described as reckless driving by some truck operators, which it said has contributed to road accidents.The NUJ wished the injured journalists a speedy recovery and reaffirmed its commitment to ethical, responsible, and professional journalism despite the challenges associated with the profession.
