Manchester United has confirmed it has secured the majority of the land required to build a new 100,000-seater stadium, moving a step closer to its long-term plan for a world-class arena near Old Trafford.
In a statement published on its official website on Monday afternoon, the club confirmed it has acquired a 25-acre site located about 350 metres north-west of the current stadium.
The acquisition removes a key obstacle in its vision to transform the Old Trafford area into a major global sporting and entertainment hub.
The planned stadium, which is expected to become the largest in the United Kingdom, is also central to a wider regeneration project aimed at revitalising the surrounding district. The club said it will work directly with affected businesses to support them through the transition period.
Collette Roche, Chief Executive Officer of Manchester United’s New Stadium Development, described the development as a major milestone.
“Today’s news highlights the progress we’re making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development,” she said.
“Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans. We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not just for them, with atmosphere, affordability and accessibility at the heart of our thinking,” she added.
She further noted that the project aligns with broader local and national development goals.
The wider 370-acre regeneration is projected to deliver about 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing, create 48,000 local jobs and over 90,000 nationally, and contribute more than £7 billion annually to the UK economy.
The announcement sparked mixed reactions on social media platform X, with many fans celebrating the development while others questioned the club’s priorities.
The project is expected to reshape the Old Trafford district significantly, with further details anticipated as planning progresses.
