The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Cross River chapter, has said that many public schools in the state are vulnerable to attacks due to absence of security guards.
The Chairman, Mr Gregory Olayi, made the statement in Calabar on Tuesday while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after a protest organised by the union.
Olayi also said that many public schools in the state were not fenced, and had no security guards.
“The ublic schools operate in wide-open premises, this is a security risk to both the teachers and students,” he said.
He said that the protest was in solidarity with the NUT, Oyo chapter, saying, “we are concerned about the brutal kidnap of teachers and students in Oyo State”
The union leader urged the political leadership to give priority attention to the lives and property of the citizenry.
“No state in the country should feel comfortable, we should show commitment to the campaign against insecurity,” he said.
Olayi urged the Cross River Government to immediately employ trained security personnel, and construct fences in order to protect public schools in the state.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
