The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Ewa Okpo, following allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking involving former Senator Effiong Bob.
According to the police, the investigation began after a petition was submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, by the former senator through his legal representatives, Samuel Ikpo & Company Chambers.In a statement issued in Uyo, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the petition alleged that the suspect published and circulated videos and other content on social media containing statements claimed to be false and damaging to the reputation of the former lawmaker.
The police said the suspect was arrested after preliminary investigations and is currently in custody while assisting investigators. The command added that the investigation is being conducted in accordance with the law and that the rights of all parties involved will be respected.
The command also reminded residents that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the right does not extend to publishing false information, engaging in cyberstalking, criminal defamation, cyberbullying, blackmail or other unlawful online activities.The police urged members of the public to use social media responsibly and warned that individuals found to have violated applicable laws would be prosecuted in line with legal procedures.
