LAGOS – Barrister Joshua Oghenejiru Muwhen, a bank chief executive, has commended the National Assembly for the speedy passage of the State Police Bill, saying that establishing state police will enhance effective grassroots policing.
Barrister Muwhen, who was speaking with newsmen in Lagos, said other arms of government should expedite action in implementing the policy.
Muwhen, the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Delta Mortgage Trust Bank Limited, stated that State Police would enhance local intelligence and bring it closer to the grassroots.
His words: “State Police can enhance local intelligence gathering and bring security closer to the people.”
He urged the government to put in place measures to prevent abuse, political interference and ethnic profiling, adding that “proper constitutional and institutional frameworks are essential.”
Commenting on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms and their impact, Muwhen noted that the administration had embarked on bold reforms, particularly the fuel subsidy removal, exchange-rate management and new tax laws.
He stated that these policies were necessary for long-term economic restructuring, even as the hardship being experienced by ordinary Nigerians had remained a major concern.
He stressed that “reforms must be accompanied by effective social protection measures, food security programmes and job creation to ensure that citizens feel the benefits.”
He maintained that Nigeria was in need of comprehensive reforms in power generation and distribution, food security, industrial production, access to affordable credit, public-sector accountability, judicial efficiency and security management among others.
