CPMC Chairman, Emeka Raises Alarm Over Sabotage Of Gov Mba’s Developmental Efforts In Orie Awgu Market

The Community Project Management Committee Chairman (CPMC) Mr. Elias Emeka of Uhuegu in Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, has condemned the destruction of the EN-G CARES/CSDA WASH VIP Toilet Project at Orie Awgu Market, describing the act as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Enugu State Government’s rural development initiatives.

The Chairman said that the project, executed under the Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) WASH Programme, became the target of repeated acts of destruction by individuals from the neighbouring Olikwu Community, despite the intervention of the Awgu Local Government Council and several peace meetings.

Community leaders said the modern sanitation facility was installed to improve hygiene and public health at the busy Orie Awgu Market. They noted that, instead of supporting the project, some persons allegedly from Olikwu, sponsored by a few stakeholders working against the governor’s interests, resorted to destroying the facility while laying claim to the project site.

According to the Chairman, the land’s ownership had long been settled by the Awgu Local Government Council, noting that the market land was handed over to the council more than 30 years ago by four communities in AWGU which include UHUEGU, OLOCHA, AMOKWE AND OLIKWU, and that the same council officially allocated the project site to Uhuegu in Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community for the execution of the government-backed sanitation project.

It was further disclosed that despite repeated peace initiatives by the Uhuegu Community and interventions by the Local Government Chairman, those opposing the project remained defiant and allegedly vowed to frustrate government development efforts in the area.

The Chairman described the destruction of the project as an attack not only on the Community but also on the developmental vision of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose administration has continued to prioritize rural infrastructure, public health, and community development across Enugu State.

“This project is not a private facility but a government intervention designed to improve the welfare of traders, residents, and visitors to Orie Awgu Market. Any attempt to destroy it is an attack on the collective interest of the people of Awgu,” the committee chairman said.

The Chairman called on the Enugu State Government, the Awgu Local Government Council, security agencies, and relevant authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for the destruction, ensure adequate protection of the project, and guarantee its speedy completion.

He also urged all communities in the area to embrace peaceful coexistence, respect lawful government decisions, and support development projects that benefit the public.

The Chairman on behalf of his committee members and the peace-loving people of Uhuegu Community in Ugwuleshi Awgu, is urging His Excellency, the governor, to intervene in the matter with the utmost urgency, as the selected few rich individuals from Olikwu village, acting without the mandate or authority of their village, have repeatedly obstructed work, incited unrest, and resorted to self-help.

The project, when completed, would continue to serve its intended purpose of improving sanitation, public health promotion, and enhancing the quality of life for the people of Orie Awgu and surrounding communities, in line with the state government’s vision.
