After nearly two decades of shaping the public image of some of Nigeria’s most recognisable personalities, award-winning fashion stylist and designer John Angel is stepping into the spotlight with DIFFbyDATS, a luxury fashion brand he believes is ready to compete on the global stage.
Saaving spent 17 years building a reputation as a stylist and image consultant in Lagos, Angel said the launch of DIFFbyDATS marks a deliberate transition from working behind the scenes to establishing a fashion house with an international identity.
In a statement, the designer said the brand has matured sufficiently to serve both the Nigerian and global luxury markets, particularly targeting members of the Nigerian diaspora seeking premium tailoring rooted in African identity.
“It is a positioning aimed as much at the Nigerian diaspora as at Lagos itself. DIFFbyDATS ships internationally, and the brand’s next chapter depends on reaching Nigerians in London, Toronto and Atlanta who want tailoring that carries a specific cultural fluency while matching the precision of established European luxury houses,” he said.
Angel explained that the philosophy underpinning the brand, Mute the Norm, challenges conventional perceptions of Nigerian luxury fashion by embracing understated elegance rather than flamboyance.
According to him, DIFFbyDATS focuses on structured tailoring, refined silhouettes and restrained colour palettes, prioritising craftsmanship and timeless design over excessive embellishment.
“Our customer is not chasing a trend. They have already built the career, the standard and the identity. The clothing simply has to match what already exists,” he said.
The designer believes there is growing global demand for Nigerian luxury tailoring, particularly at a time when the country’s fashion industry has earned international recognition through ready-to-wear collections and streetwear, while bespoke tailoring has remained comparatively underrepresented.
Hedescribed DIFFbyDATS as an attempt to position Nigerian tailoring as a globally recognised luxury offering capable of competing with established fashion houses.
The brand’s name, Different by De Angelic Touch Stylist, reflects the identity Angel built over years as a stylist before deciding to place his own signature at the forefront of his work.
“It is not a rebrand,” he said. “It is the same hand, finally signing its own work.”
With international shipping already in place and a strategy focused on global expansion, Angel said DIFFbyDATS aims to bridge Nigerian craftsmanship with international luxury standards, positioning itself as a distinctive voice in contemporary African fashion.
